beach to bundled.

it’s almost november. novemmber? NO.VEM.BER?

when i think back over the summer months – to the near daily escapades to the lake, the countless weddings and curly, frizzed out humidity hair days i just can’t believe they’re long gone.

the back of my van (yes, van) is a clear indicator of the obvious loss of time; big bag full of shovels, buckets, random sand-digging paraphernalia and sunscreen. blankets for friday night vineyard-ing. a couple pairs of reefs and a bike. seriously, several small children could be lost somewhere between the back cubby thingy and the second row of seats for all i know.

alas, my lawn is no longer green but orange and yellow and red. a sprinkling of leaf confetti all things colorful, beautiful and annoying. think this year i’ll leave the leaf blowing to justin (remember this?).

we managed to go apple picking at the beginning of the season (the previous two years i showed up on the last day. unintentionally) and made umpteen loaves of apple bread, a batch of swedish apple pie and just this past week, apple brownies. we even carved pumpkins.

my blood is raging with sugar and starch and red wine. my feet are wearing socks and the big puffy comforter is back on our bed.

often i’m a little slow to process. but today, with confidence, i can say fall is here.

safe to say we’re pretty happy about it.

you may notice that j is also having a hard time accepting this non-summer weather. today we compromised between my chosen outfit and his. soccer uniform over fleece pants and shirt. still not sure who won this battle. sneaking suspicion says not me. at least he’s warm.

on a side note, i am just uploading all my photos from said beaches, weddings, frizzy hair days and such (all 498 of them to be exact) and might just take a moment to re-live and share. there were many quite exquisite ones, indeed.

happy cozy, drizzly, stay in bed all day kinda thursday to you.

death by (a really cute) scarf

for a brief moment this weekend i thought my days on earth had come to end.
you see, my scarf got in a tussle with a leaf blower and almost met it’s demise.

and i, unfortunately, was on the receiving noosed-neck end of the scarf.

yes, i almost strangled myself via a nice navy blue sparkly scarf and a 240 hp leaf blower. and i’m pretty sure if there was a contest for the most undignified, freakish and totally hysterical way to bite it, that would be it.

justin had been/has been raking, blowing and hauling to the curb trillions of leaves. it’s one of those grown up things you have to do – i guess? – and luckily for us our town does come by with a massive truck and suck them up and away. so, could be a lot worse i suppose.

as i took over the 1/17 of the yard that was left i heard my neighbor shout to justin, ” about time you put that woman of yours to work!”. um, right. moving along…

so of course i was putting in the extra effort. i’ll show him that i, too, can do physical labor with the best of them.

and what better way to show him how strong and capable i am then, totally unaware, letting the tassel from my scarf get sucked into the motor of the leaf blower, wrapping up and around it in .78 seconds flat and cinching so tightly around my jugular that i drop to the ground mouthing hail marys. ok, well if i knew what a hail mary was and how to say it, that would have been the first thing i’d have done.

grappling for the scarf and pulling with all my might to get some slack – and some air – all i could think about was what if i seriously just died right here. in my front yard. strangulation by scarf by way of leaf blower. i can just see the obituary now.

so, the lesson here is simple. when your neighbor gives your husband a dig about his “woman” your best bet is to go after him directly. none of this oh yeah, i’ll show you with my fancy leaf blower crap.

that and i suppose, when using machines with exposed motors keep the dangling accessories to a minimum.

i’m thinking about sending this post to craftsman. maybe we’ll get a replacement for our now totally shot blower.

worth a shot, no?

lucky to be alive,

hannah

fantastic fall

it’s fall. and ah, i’m really happy about that, in case you haven’t noticed.

if possible, i would live in this indefinitely. clear blue skies, warming sun, fleeces and hats and wind. not to mention apples, pumpkins, ample excuses to bake things high in fat, sugar and gooey goodness.

and piles of leaves, of course.

happy to be outside and soaking up the goodness kind of a day.

which tends to make for really good sleeping weather and really heart-melting, thumb-sucking, sleepy little ones.

and a totally fabulous occasion, an impromptu gathering with family in the birthplace of fantastic fall - vermont. and with really, really good beer ta boot; harpoon’s octoberfest.

a lovely day that filled my heart with some much needed warmth.

like lap time with great uncles.

hand-holding time with too-cute-for-words second cousins.

and girl time with some of the most fierce (yes, as in tyra) dna compatible estrogen i know.

these trees can take their sweet time in changing from green to orangey red.

this girl could get used to weekends like this.

i love them, to the moon and back.
